In October 2024 the Rugby Football League (The RFL) confirmed that the Betfred Wheelchair Super League would expand from five to eight teams from 2025 as part of their strategic expansion plans to grow the sport.
After an extensive analysis period by the club which involved giving everyone a voice from the playing group, to current partners and the board it was voted that the club would submit a bid for one of. the eight places.
Regardless of the outcome this is absolutely massive for the club given we only formed 20 months ago as is testament the hard work that has gone on behind the scenes to build the clubs infrastructure, capacity and partnerships to even make submitting a bid a possibility.
Martyn Gill the clubs founder said "It is nothing short of outstanding what has been achieved by our club in such a short space of time. On the pitch we have reached a cup final and off it we have worked extremely hard to establish a club from scratch whilst developing some key strategic partnerships that have enabled us to progress'.
If we are successful in our bid we know this is going to be a steep learning curve, the established teams in the league have some of the best talent on the planet within their ranks, but given the proposed format of the league structure we believe there is an opportunity to learn and grow from these experiences whilst also having the opportunity to compete in some competitive games throughout the course of the season.
The Giants could be on the verge of making history as being the first ever Scottish team to be in the Super League, not just in Wheelchair Rugby League but any variant of the sport.
The closing date for bid applications is the 29th November and we hope to find out if we are successful by the 13th December.
Could this be the perfect Christmas present for the club? We certainly hope so!
